Problem

The client’s Shopify store was experiencing slow page loading times, poor Core Web Vitals scores, and low visibility for individual product pages in organic search. Despite having well-designed product pages, their metadata was poorly optimized, and outdated keywords were limiting search traffic. The site also struggled with layout shifts and unoptimized media, negatively affecting mobile user experience and SEO performance.



Challenges


  • Shopify's SEO Limitations: Shopify can be restrictive when it comes to advanced SEO customization, especially for things like structured data, script control, and URL structure.

  • Limited Access to Developer Resources: As this was a freelance engagement, I worked independently without direct developer support. I was solely responsible for all optimizations, debugging, and implementing technical fixes in the backend.

  • Time Constraints: With only 40 hours allocated to the project, I had to prioritize high-impact actions that could be completed efficiently and deliver immediate value.

  • No Control Over Back-End Hosting/Theme Code: Some Core Web Vitals issues were caused by theme-level code or app conflicts, which I had to work around without deep customization access.


Scope of Work

  • Website Indexing & Submission

    • Ensured proper indexing of the website by submitting the sitemap to Google Search Console and resolving any crawl errors.

    • Confirmed that all product and category pages were indexed and visible to search engines.

  • Core Web Vitals Optimization

    • Improved site speed and performance metrics across key pages

    • Addressed layout shifts, render-blocking resources, and image loading strategies

    • Worked within Shopify's limitations to achieve measurable improvements on CLS, LCP, and FID scores

  • On-Page SEO for Product Pages

    • Updated meta titles and descriptions for clarity and keyword relevance

    • Refined target keywords per product category to improve search visibility

    • Ensured proper keyword placement without compromising readability or user experience

  • Shopify admin + SEO plugins

  • Manual keyword research (using free tools and Google suggestions)


Results

Although this was a short-term contract, the client saw immediate improvements:


  • Faster loading times across product pages

  • Passed Core Web Vitals assessment on multiple pages

  • Improved keyword alignment across product titles and metadata

  • A stronger technical foundation for future SEO scaling
